Earth Shaking, Doors Opening, & Breaking Free! Acts16:26

Who should we be trusting in?

What is trust?

Trust is; assured reliance on the character, ability, strength, or truth of someone or something; one in which confidence is placed

What is Confidence?

Confidence is; faith or belief that one will act in a right, proper, or effective way

Don’t we all at times deal with trusting someone? Have you ever lost the trust you had in a friend, family member, or boss? Trust is a very important part of any relationship you have. Doesn’t it seem like anytime we put our trust in someone it gets betrayed?

Most people would probably say that communication is the most important part of a lasting and happy relationship. I feel that communication is a key factor of whether a relationship is successful or unsuccessful. I also believe that the number one factor in making a relationship work is TRUST.

Trust is a KEY FACTOR. Now, the bible says that we are not to put our trust in a friend or our confidence in a man. I seem to do it opposite than most people. I usually put my trust in someone when I first meet them. My pastor says, “verify and then trust”.

The reason why I believe trust is the most important part of any relationship is: if you do not trust that person you will not be able to communicate with that person. You may hide things from them. You may not tell them the truth. You are not honest with them. If you cannot trust the person you are speaking with, you may feel uncomfortable being open and honest about things.

The bible says that we are to put our trust in the Lord, to put our confidence in Him. As it says in Proverbs 30:5 Gods word is pure, He is a shield to them that put their trust in Him. We are to put our trust in God acknowledging him and He shall direct our paths. Putting our trust in Him and he will deliver us in the time of trouble. By trusting in God, He will give you strength when you have no strength.

God continued to remind us over and over to put our trust in Him. He knows that we are flesh and that we will make mistakes. It says that Matthew 18:21Then came Peter to him, and said, Lord, how oft shall my brother sin against me, and I forgive him? till seven times?  22Jesus saith unto him, I say not unto thee, Until seven times: but, Until seventy times seven.

Yes, God says we are supposed to forgive that person who breaks our trust and sins. He does not say that we have to trust that person again but to forgive them 70x7 in one day. Let it go and let God deal with that person. Now, if it is someone very close to you that you love and they have broken your trust, in my opinion you should forgive them and do as my Pastor would say, "Verify and then trust again." If the person continues to break your trust and lie to you then you may have to remove yourself from the situation until that person can regain your trust. I’m not applying that to all situations. Each situation may be handled in different ways, but the most important thing is you do have to forgive them. Forgive and trust are two different things.

Sometimes we may not understand everything. We need to follow what Proverbs 3:5-6 says to lean not unto our own understanding with trusting in HIM and He will direct our paths. We may not understand why we have to go through certain things but don’t give up. Keep your trust in God. He will fight your battles for you (2 Chron 20:15). He will give you a way to escape(1 Corin 10:13). He will give you shelter and refuge(2 Sam 22:3). He will give you the strength to endure(Psalms 28:7). It pays off to trust in the Lord than to put your trust in man. Why not give it a try?

Lets look at a few scriptures that pertain to who we are supposed to be putting our trust in. There are 188 verses in the bible that have trust in it but I have listed just a few..

2 Samuel 22:3
The God of my rock; in him will I trust: he is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; thou savest me from violence.

Psalm 18:2
The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.

Psalm 25:20
O keep my soul, and deliver me: let me not be ashamed; for I put my trust in thee.

Psalm 28:7
The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped: therefore my heart greatly rejoiceth; and with my song will I praise him.

Psalm 37:40
And the LORD shall help them, and deliver them: he shall deliver them from the wicked, and save them, because they trust in him

Psalm 118:8
It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in man.

Psalm 118:9
It is better to trust in the LORD than to put confidence in princes.

Proverbs 3:5-6
Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. And in all thy ways acknowledge Him, and hes shall direct thy paths.

Proverbs 30:5
Every word of God is pure: he is a shield unto them that put their trust in him.

Micah 7:5
Trust ye not in a friend, put ye not confidence in a guide: keep the doors of thy mouth from her that lieth in thy bosom.

Here are a few verses that explain what happens if we do not put our trust in God.

Psalm 52:1-7

1Why boastest thou thyself in mischief, O mighty man? the goodness of God endureth continually.

2The tongue deviseth mischiefs; like a sharp razor, working deceitfully.

3Thou lovest evil more than good; and lying rather than to speak righteousness. Selah.

4Thou lovest all devouring words, O thou deceitful tongue.

5God shall likewise destroy thee for ever, he shall take thee away, and pluck thee out of thy dwelling place, and root thee out of the land of the living. Selah.

6The righteous also shall see, and fear, and shall laugh at him:

7Lo, this is the man that made not God his strength; but trusted in the abundance of his riches, and strengthened himself in his wickedness.

Proverbs 11:28
He that trusteth in his riches shall fall; but the righteous shall flourish as a branch.

Jeremiah 17:5
Thus saith the LORD; Cursed be the man that trusteth in man, and maketh flesh his arm, and whose heart departeth from the LORD.
